Initial Research

My research technique is not the strongest, therefore i have taken research from a verity of areas. I have researched some books from libraries for inspiration.

The Silver Arm by Jim Fitzpatrick features stories and fairy tales from mainly Irish Celtic culture, as well as some colorful illustrations.

The Art of Celtica by Courtney Davis has many illustrations inspired by Celtic Gods and descriptions of the main Celtic gods and there aspects

The History of the Celtic people by Henri Hubert is a more realistic historical book, which has descriptions of Celtic clothing, culture, weapons and lifestyle.

Mood boards and initial ideas

Brief

I have chosen the 3D character brief and will develop Aggressive and brutish antagonist based loosely on Celtic culture.

I chose this brief because it is tailored to the type of role i wish to work in (3D characters for games).

While studying some job roles, I have identified the areas that I will need to practice:
- Improve my anatomy and character designs
-Modeling and texturing characters (light, shade, color and detail in creating texture maps) using Maya, ZBrush and Photoshop
-Improve my High to low poly model pipeline

Develop and Produce a character intended for use in a modern console computer game.

Brief Digest:

You are to conceive and design a character suitable for an action/adventure game - you are then to develop and produce two high quality models of the same character - 1 low poly for a mobile game engine and 1 high poly for a modern console engine.

You are to include a simple rig for the models so that they may be posed.

The high poly model must have a total texture memory footprint of 4096x4096 and Poly limit of 10,000 triangles

The low poly model must have a total texture memory footprint of 1024x1024 and Poly limit of 2000 triangles

The Concept:

Your client is developing an action/adventure game set in a fully realised world. They have outsourced most of the art assets to external companies. They would like you to develop the lead character and to produce the model.

Choose from one of the following character archetypes (these can be male or female):

·         Naturalistic and agile hero warrior based on the ancient Mayan culture.
·         Aggressive and brutish antagonist based loosely on Celtic culture.
·         Peaceful and progressive shamanistic ‘elder’ figure based on ‘futuristic’ technology.

The Purpose

Build a reliable and deep resource of imagery and influences.
Develop concept work which describes exactly how the character will look
Build, sculpt, model, texture and rig a high and low poly version of the character
Create a 360 degree turntable movie clip of the posed models.
     Manage project workloads.

Live drawing practice - During my time at college and university, life drawing has helped me when conceptualizing characters, allowing me to create more realistic characters.

I feel the live drawing practice will be useful to quickly conceptualize ideas, and is an area that I should practice more.

Still life practice.

Still life is another area i don't practice often which would help with my concept development. During this still life i found that i took to long on the line work, which meant i had less time on the shading. I think more practice will improve my workflow.

The first exercise i tried was a perspective study, which didn't go well. This was probably because i don't practice perspective often, although i have been taught 1 and 2 point in the past. i found it hard to get the image to the right scale.

I tried a few more perspective drawings, which went better.

A made up street. 1 point perspective

Whitespace. 1 point perspective

One of the main problems i have with perspective is the scale. I found that the overall image is to short, therefore i need to work on my measuring.
